A day at the beach is bliss, but without shade you’ll end up looking like a lobster. Sunburns are painful, embarrassing and can cause irreversible damage to your skin. A beach shelter will protect you and your loved ones from the sun’s harmful UV rays and will also keep you cool. If you also pack snacks, cold drinks and lunch in a portable cooler, you can stay on the beach all day and indulge in free summer fun!

What’s the best beach shade?

Everyone is different, so the best beach shelter for you depends on your particular needs:

How many adults and children need to be accommodated under the umbrella at the same time (now and in the future?)

How much stuff you need (chairs, bags, toys, dogs, drink coolers?)

How easy you want it to be to set up and pack (do you do it alone or do you ask for help?)

How often do you go to the beach (every summer weekend or a few times a year?)

How long do you want it to last (a year or two, or more years in the future?)

What should I be looking for in a beach shelter?

Level of protection

Of course, you should always consider the level of sun protection it offers. When shopping, look for products designed to provide maximum UV protection – and look for the ‘most effective’ UVE (ultraviolet effectiveness) rating.

UPF50+ is the highest level of protection available for Australian fabrics.

Sizing

Start by working out how many people you intend to accommodate under the beach shelter so you can find the right size. Heather says beach shelters (if used properly and with other sun protection measures) are particularly good for families with young children, as sunscreen is not recommended for babies under 6 months of age.

Weight and setting

Weight may also be a decisive factor, together with ease of set-up. For example, is this a single person job or do you need extra help? The last thing you want is to stand on a searing hot beach and struggle to set up or put away a beach shelter.

Also, pay attention to the quality of the fabric and the overall durability of the shelter – will it last? How sturdy will it be in those sea breezes? As you wriggle in and out of your swim trunks, you may be looking for something that will provide privacy. The last thing you want is a shelter that blows away in a gust of wind!
